Yearlong

Once the school year gets started, every incoming freshman, is partnered with a student mentor who is completely different than they are. Part of this gift to both mentor and mentee, is a chance to suspend judgement, learn from one another, and honor people for who they are. Our freshman will experience what it means to step out of one’s comfort zone, lose one’s cool card, and meet regularly with a diverse team of 1:5, mentor to mentee. These are just part of the intentional systems we have in place to support our freshman class.

Throughout the year our freshman/sophmore class will experience lessons led by our team of student mentors. Our student mentors have been trained to lead 30 min classroom lessons. The lessons are activity focused with time for discussions around how to ‘do your Best Work’ and ‘be your Best Self’. Lessons are constantly upgraded to meet the needs of the commit community.

Our student mentors stay connected to their mentees throughout their first semester formally in class and informally to help answer questions, help with academic challenges, and just be a friend. In the spring, our mentees have an opportunity to become mentors and contribute to the new incoming community at Lufkin HS.
