Confirmation: A New Chapter in Education

“It would be an understatement to say I’ve been inspired ever since.”

Walking out of the dimly lit halls of Mandarin Middle last Friday, I scribbled one word into my notebook: confirmation. What unfolded that day wasn’t just another school program—it was a glimpse into the future of education.

When Belief Meets Reality

When people ask if I believe in Spark, my answer is always yes. The research, the pulse of student behavior, and the evolving needs of our newest generation of digital citizens all pointed to the potential of this tool.

But deep down, I still wondered:
Would it really work?
Would students feel empowered through a video?
Would they take ownership?
Would real connections form?

As a perfectionist who often walks the line between believer and skeptic, I had my doubts.

The Moment Everything Changed

The moment I stepped into the media center at Mandarin Middle School, all those what ifs disappeared.

There sat 50 middle school mentors, their ears open and their hearts wide, listening as their peer—executive mentor Oliver—delivered a powerful opening speech. Oliver spoke with purpose, setting a tone that rippled across the day.

He introduced the Spark like no other—an invitation, not an instruction.

The Spark That Ignited Something Bigger

As the Spark video began, something incredible happened.
The students didn’t just watch—they responded.

You could feel the current in the room shift—energy bouncing back and forth like light refracting off mirrors. They leaned in, laughed at moments that hit close to home, and nodded at words that resonated.

It wasn’t passive learning; it was dynamic exchange.

They brought their whole selves—their hearts, their lived experiences, their curiosity. They weren’t rehearsed or scripted. They were confident, not overprepared. Authentic, not performative.

Spark didn’t tell them what to do—it gave them a framework, a rhythm, and the courage to fill in the melody themselves.

Students led students with an ease that felt both powerful and natural. In that moment, I realized we had packed what we once thought was the role of adults—facilitation, leadership, emotional guidance—into a package that was both digestible and deeply empowering for youth to carry forward.

Spark gave the structure; the students brought the soul.

It was exactly what its name promised: something to ignite the flame within.

Ask the Students

So, if you ask me now whether this model works—whether middle school students can truly step up as positive leaders for their peers—I wouldn’t tell you to ask me.

I’d say, ask Oliver.
Ask his peers.
Ask the students themselves.

Because they are the future. They are the voice. They are the power.

A Lesson I’ll Never Forget

As someone with a master’s in program administration, I’ve spent years living at the policy level—loving the research, the planning, the committees. But no meeting I’ve ever sat in has been as transformative as simply listening to students.

That day reminded me of my true purpose in education: amplifying the voices of millions of students still waiting for their chance to be heard.

Confidence and Courage in Tandem

One mentor came up to me, nervous and hesitant, and asked:

“Ms. Ali, can I do this?”

His question revealed what I’ve always believed—nervousness and confidence aren’t opposites; they’re deeply intertwined.

He wasn’t asking for permission; he was seeking validation of what he already believed.

With the encouragement of two dedicated advisors and the support of their peers, these middle school mentors embraced their nerves, stepped forward with bravery, and led their classmates with heart.

Spark gave him the confidence to take on the role—and trained him with tools it’s taken others years to craft.

The Question That Stays With Me

As I reflect on such a pivotal time, I can’t help but ask:
What was middle school like for you? What could it have been?
What if you had someone like them walking alongside you?
